Discovered on Route 117
-
(Written December 2011)
In the past we drove up north
on the 117. The only sight I remember is the giant ice-cream cone in
St. Jerome. The cone is still there, and so is the Prevost (Lesage)
flea-market that has become a regular weekend destination, and plenty
of garages, small industries, garden centers, Antique stores, and if
you look well, a lot more to be discovered!
Ming Wah: We found a
Chinese Buffet, which opens daily as of 11:30 a.m. It features a
substantial all-you-can eat lunch buffet including a sushi bar, $9.95
on week-days, it is a good value for your money! Ming Wah, 1195, boul.
Des Laurentides, St. Jerome (previously St. Antoine), 450 565-9020
www.buffetmingwah.com.
Restaurant Chez Johnny: In St. Jerome in a converted
train car, you will find the best Club sandwich in the Laurentians (coined
by an old-timer from Lachute), hamburger steak, and a daily special
such as meatloaf and trimmings, all at very reasonable prices. The
atmosphere is warm, the service friendly, and you sit in a booth
surrounded by 1950s nickel-décor and old Coca-Cola posters. Restaurant
Chez Johnny: 603 Rue St-Georges, St. Jerome. 450 436-1339.
On your way to Prevost, watch for “Café 4 sucres” open for
breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is bistro style featuring a
daily special such as crêpe with apple and Swiss cheese ($12.23) about
which my friend exclaimed “Delicious”. They also serve delectable
coffees and cakes, in the summer they have a large terrace. Wireless
internet is available too. The Café has Friday night performances
organised by Lyne Collin, whose artwork is displayed on the walls of
the café. The next concert is by Mélissa Lavergne & Gilles Caplan, she
is a percussionist and he sings, and plays the guitar. Fri., Feb., 24,
tickets $25. Ticket holders may also reserve their table for dinner at
6 p.m. “Café 4 sucres”, 2559, boul. Cure-Labelle (rte. 117), Prévost.
450 432-3784 www.cafe4sucres.com.
Coming along the 117, you pass a large IGA store, across from which
there is a sports club providing circuit training facilities geared
towards women. The center has just celebrated its first anniversary.
It offers “Essentrics” a muscle-toning flexibility workout class, as
well as Zumba classes. It is open weekdays 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sat.,
& Sun., 9 a.m. to noon. Swann, 2632, Curé Labelle, 450
335-3356. swann_prevost@videotron.ca
A little bit further north there is a fairly new Auberge La Belle
et la Belge, offering a few tasting evenings during the winter. A
beer-tasting event: four beers from the same brewery as well as the
cheese from the same abbey Thur., Jan., 26, 7:30 p.m.; Sushi & Sake
Thur., Feb, 9; wine tasting Feb., 23; Whiskey Mar., 8; Port &
Chocolates Mar., 22; and wine and finger foods Apr., 5. Tickets: $35,
places are limited, thus reservations are required.
If you go you may
be able to see a collection of paintings by Isabelle Hamel, a Prevost
self-taught artist, whom we encountered recently at the Chantecler
annual art show, and at the Christmas art sale in Prevost. “La Belle
et la Belge”, 2731, boul. Curé Labelle, Prévost 450 335-3533
http://labelleetlabelge.com.

Further north you arrive at “Le 117” a bright new restaurant
and bar in clean-line décor, and comfortable seating. The menu is
Italian inspired featuring venison, lamb, fish and pasta. The dinner
table-d’hôte includes soup or salad, coffee and desert. The silver,
plates, and glassware are of modern design. I chose a meal starting
with a mixed, well seasoned salad, followed by a duo-pasta topped with
dainty sprouts.

The coffee was good, and the desert lovely (Total bill
tax included $20.51). The restaurant is open seven days a week until
11 p.m. Mon., Tue., Wed., & Sat., starting 5 p.m. Lunch: Thur., &
Fri., 11 a.m. Sunday brunch starts at 9 a.m. Restaurant Le 117, 2951,
boul., Curé Labelle, Prévost. 450 335-1170.
