O’Petit – Where Morin Heights People Meet and Eat

Photo:  Jacob Dampal with wife Zoila at their restaurant O’Petit in Morin Heights.

In December 2010, a cloud fell over Morin Heights.  Restaurant O’Petit closed down, and people lost their hub, having to resort to meeting for a coffee at I.G.A. of all places!

In February 2011, O’Petit re-opened in a new, better location, and without any announcements or special invitations the place filled up.  You may now bring your own wine for your luncheon at O’Petit (if you forgot, just hop over to Vaillancourt).  O’Petit has daily lunch specials priced (about $10 to $15.)  Breakfast is as it was in the past…hearty, and served with a smile.  Jacob Dampal is the chef.  His wife Zoila takes care of the front.  Together they provide wholesome meals, and a friendly place to meet, be it inside or on the terrace.  The walls are decorated with photographs of Morin Heights yesteryear.

When you come by, you may see old timers, fathers and sons, gardeners, contractors, and “wood doctors” on their break, and of course, the village colourful characters doing the daily Gazette Puzzle.

Village people hold breakfast meetings, birthday celebrations etc. at this spot.  If you need to have a private party, you may even arrange for a special cake to be baked for you.  And if you wish to come on a Friday, you better make sure that your reserve your “Fish ‘N Chips”, the place is swarming with people who had the same idea.  Sunday morning is another popular time.  O’Petit has a menu with à la carte items from Soup of the Day ($3.95) to Grilled Cheese ($5.95) to O’Petit Panini in different combinations ($8.75), and there is a children’s Menu ($4.75), coffee ($1.75), Espresso and Cappuccino, and even a Smoothie!  Deserts are served decorated with a coulis and whipped cream.

Restaurant is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on week days and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends.  O’Petit Restaurant: 879 Village Road, Morin Heights.  450 226-8848.  Bon Appétit!

Article from October 2011- I  am sorry to report that this restaurant closed in November 2011.  “Belle et Bom” – Fish & Chips and Fun in St. Sauveur

On a sunny day last summer, we drove by and saw the sign “Fish & Chips”; this intrigued us we just had to try it! We did it on a Saturday late afternoon. We sat in the front terrace, and chose the special complete meal: starting with a home-made vegetable barley soup, followed by a plate of fish & Chips, salad with a raspberry home-dressing, and three different home-made tartar sauces served on a shell. The fish was Sea Bass fried crisply in thin batter. Coffee and a desert, a tasty carrot cake, were included. Sophie Cussons, the owner, told us that all recipes are from her mother and grandmother. The Fish and Chips meal is $10.95. For an additional $2.99 you also get soup, coffee and desert. If you so desire, you can have mashed potatoes or rice, and for an extra $1, even Poutine instead of the fries. The bill for two people was $31 (tax included).

Sophie came with a friend to St. Sauveur one day, saw this former pawn shop, and decided to open a restaurant that allows people with smaller budgets to have a dinner-dance evening in St. Sauveur. She really likes seeing people having fun. Her friend Leo Coursol comes in on Fridays and Saturdays to play soft jazz, pop or simply dancing music. On Wednesdays Sophie has a Karaoke night.

The restaurant also serves a $16.95 meal of fillet mignon or ribs. There is also a complete meal for two of fillet mignon including a bottle of wine for $59.95. The restaurant is open Mon., to Thur., from 11:30 a.m., to 8 p.m., Weekend hours are: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. 123 rue Principale, Saint-Sauveur, 450 240-0911.

September 2010 -  Belle et Bom - St. Sauveur

On September 2nd  I visited Belle et Bom ate a meal with a friend and we both decided that the place has merit, nice ambiance, good friendly service and one gets value for the money, especially for the Fish & Chips which was well cooked and tasty.  Since then I have spoken to Sophie Cussons, the owner and tried some other items on the menu, including ribs, poutin with a three-pepper sauce, pudding Chaumeur and found it that her aim is to have people who are having a great time, while not spending a fortune on food, and she even has a friend who comes to play on Friday and Saturday nights so people can dance if they wish.  On Wednesday nights she lets people enjoy Karaoke too.

August 2010

Belle et Bob Fish and Chips - New in Saint Sauveur - a great place to spend an evening, especially on Wednesdays and Fridays, when the management provides live entertainment with jazz and blues artists.  The price is right, the service gracious and prompt.  You might even wish to drop for an afternoon coffee and cake and do your high-speed internet.  More to come about the music program at this location at 123 Main Street, the owners aim to please and provide value for your money.  Example, a plate of Fish and Chips $10.95 served with salad and three different kinds of Tartar sauce.... same as Table d'hôte with soup, coffee and desert, just add $2.99.  Call to find out which musician is featured 450-240-0911 !
