Call for Visual Artists – Auction for Haiti

On behalf of the Comité Haïti Laurentides, we invite you to participate in an auction that will be held for the reconstruction of “Eddy Pascal” college, which crumbled with the earthquake and left more than 450 students without a school, in one of Port-au-Prince’s poorest neighbourhoods.

For the artists, it will be an opportunity to exhibit and share their art for a great cause. The artwork will be auctioned to a public who will appreciate your art and your generosity. Because, it’s well known that artists are often in need themselves, we will ask for a bottom price, which will include the portion the artist will ask for their expenses.

The auction will take place in October 2010, however, submissions are due by the end of August 2010. For more information and your contribution, please contact Denise or Pieter at 450 226-1944 or 514 770-8990 or at denpiet@gmail.com.

January 2010

Landfill Art is a project started by Ken Marquis about 17 moths ago.  It began with old automobile hub caps from the 1930’s through the 1970’s.  Artists from all over the United States and other countries were invited to create art with hub-caps.  There are over 400 completed art projects which can be seen on the website www.landfillart.org

Participating artists are from all 50 States in the United States and 51 countries.  As a result, this global art project has become the largest artist initiative ever!  The project will result in a published “Landfillart Book” as well as a road tour of 200 Landfillart pieces.  The book and traveling show will publicly portray the global art community’s effort to positively impact the environment through repurposing previous metal waste into great Landfillart.

Apply to: artistsubmissions@landfillart.org . You can also mail your information (CD format is preferred) to:  Landfill Art, 122 South Main Street. Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, 18701 USA Telephone: 1-570-823-0519 ken@landfillart.org

I have just completed mine.  I really believe in recycled art, have been painting on empty Clementine cases for years, as well as on other parts of cars, discarded shelving, coffee cans, etc.  This piece depicts things acquired or received as gifts, many of which end up in the garbage to become earth again….in this case the items are made of cloth, they contain embroidery, and lace with flowers, all things laboriously made by women, that end up forgotten when they lose their youth ….all that hard work….for what?  The items that inspired me are a quilted purse received as a gift, made of colours that suggest land (earth) with flowers, an embroidered little tablecloth made by my late aunt, lace from old underwear, and a little dainty scarf….all symbols of womanhood and Mother Nature.

An invitation received from the Artists of Pontiac.  It is a lovely idea for artists who are not committed to another exhibition during July 12th to 17th, 2010. Due date for submissions:  May 3rd, 2010.  See details.
