Joe
Louis: An American Romance
A ‘Knock-Out’ for
Theatre and Sports Fans
“Everyone has a plan until they’ve been hit.”
- Joe Louis
Infinithéâtre is thrilled to present the world première of
David Sherman’s Joe Louis: An American Romance,
starring Ardon Bess, at the historic Bain St-Michel
5300, St-Dominique, Montreal. The play opened January 27 and continues
to February 20. It is hot on the heels of a new Joe Louis biography by
two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Randy Roberts, and just in time to
celebrate Black History Month. Two-time Canadian Olympian, boxing
legend and professional coach, Ian Clyde, is teaching the Joe Louis cast
the finer points of a right cross and a left jab before leaving for
China to coach that country’s Olympic boxing team.

David Sherman & Guy Sprung
David Sherman’s Joe Louis: An American Romance is a dramatic
biography of the black boxer who was the heavyweight champion of the
world from 1937 to 1949. The play takes the audience through Joe’s final
days working as a “celebrity-greeter” for a Las Vegas casino as he is
forced to relive the ups and downs of his celebrated career. Broke,
deluded and addicted, Joe finds himself in the ring one last time facing
the two opponents his feared right fist couldn’t knock out: the IRS and
time.
Guy Sprung, Infinithéâtre’s Artistic Director, said, “What a
profound irony that in pre-WWII USA, when Joe stepped into the ring to
fight Max Schmeling, it was black America defending the notions that
white Americans held dear – democracy, equality and tolerance – this
during a time when those very ideals were not practiced in much of the
country.”
Newly
appointed writer-in-residence David Sherman, whose play The Daily
Miracle was an Infinithéâtre hit last spring, drives home the dramatic
extremes of Joe’s career by juxtaposing young Joe at the peak of his
fame with old Joe at the end of his illustrious career. “Joe had to
defend himself in the ring, defend himself against racists and a
virulent press, take on the Jim Crow rules of the nation he loved and in
one symbolic bout, go head to head with the Nazis for the protection of
a supposed democratic country, in which many citizens despised him and
the freedoms he was fighting for,” says playwright David Sherman. “And
he did it with modesty and grace.”
Multiple
Gemini nominee and winner of several awards for his work in film and on
stage, Ardon Bess says he is, “indeed happy to be back in
Montréal and honoured to be playing this incredible role with such a
fine company.” Young Joe played by Samuel Platel, enjoyed membership in
the most glamourous entertainment circles at the peak of his fame. Lana
Turner and Lena Horn, who will be making appearances on the Bain’s
stage, were two such intimates.

The
“two Joes” aren’t the only stars lighting up the stage. The powerhouse
cast includes internationally acclaimed Cary Lawrence as Frankie, the
elegant Danny Blanco Hall as Jack Johnson, and the ever-popular Tristian
D. Lalla shines in a variety of roles, as does the talented Jennifer
Miller, the award-winning Jessica B. Hill and the incredibly versatile
Scott Kettles. The extensive design team includes James Lavoie (Set),
Veronica Classen (Costumes), David-Alexandre Chabot (Lighting), Keith
Thomas (Sound) and Tom Fennario (Video) with Michael Panich as Stager
Manager, apprenticed by Eric Savory.
