Welcome to My World by Ilania

Ilania Abileah took some time off to complete a collection of hand-moulded ceramics, including “Love” and “Mood” bowls, as well as some prints inspired by poetry, traditional symbols, dance movements and flowers. Ilania lives in Quebec since 1968 and in the Laurentians since 1993.

Ilania Abileah blasted herself out of her secretarial desk in Tel-Aviv, flew out of the office window as did the sparrow that visited her on the windowsill; became an airline hostess, came to Canada with a four-month old baby, and was forced to go back to office work.  At age fifty Ilania returned to painting and started sketching everywhere, on whatever surface was available, including restaurant placemats, with cosmetic pencils etc. Then due to a company merger, Ilania lost a lower-management job at age fifty-eight, entered the Concordia university Fine Arts program thus turning a hobby into a vocation.  After spending thirty-five years of her life enclosed in offices – she obtained a bachelor's degree (BFA 2001) in studio arts at age sixty-three!  Ilania is a member of Route des Arts du grand Argenteuil, ARTS Morin Heights, and CIEM – Print workshop, Ste. Scholastique, Mirabel.  She now passes winters creating art, taking art courses, covering the cultural scene in the Laurentians in the local media, and spends her summers being inspired by the garden to gather forces to withstand the long Quebec winter.  Ilania enjoys taking in performances in dance, music, theatre, visual & fine arts events.

While recuperating from a leg injury in 2007, Ilania took classes with Morin-Heights ceramics artist Maria Teresa Ronca.  Ceramics has become a new passion which she hopes to share with the public. Thus, during February-April this year,  Ilania took some time off to complete a collection of hand-moulded ceramics, including “Love” and “Mood” bowls, as well as some prints inspired by poetry, traditional symbols, dance movements and flowers.

The exhibition opens on Thursday, May 12th, 5 – 7 p.m., with the artist present.  Show continues to Friday, May 27th.  If you wish to visit the display with Ilania at another time, please call 450-226-3889.   ICI par les arts opening hours:  Mon., to Wed., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thur., 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Closed Sundays!  ICI par les arts, 712 rue Saint Georges, St. Jerome. 450-569-4000 www.iciparlesarts.com.
