Joe Louis: An American Romance

This show was well worth the winter drive into Montreal!

“Infinithéâtre” presents the world première of David Sherman’s “Joe Louis: An American Romance”, starring Ardon Bess, from January 27 to February 20.  The play is hot on the heels of a new Joe Louis biography by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Randy Roberts, and just in time to celebrate Black History Month.  David Sherman’s “Joe Louis: An American Romance” is a dramatic biography of the black boxer who was the heavyweight champion of the world from 1937 to 1949. The play takes the audience through Joe’s final days working as a “celebrity-greeter” for a Las Vegas casino.  Broke, deluded and addicted Joe finds himself in the ring one last time facing the two opponents his feared right fist couldn’t defeat: the IRS and time. Multiple Gemini nominee and winner of several awards for his work in film and on stage, Ardon Bess says he is, “indeed happy to be back in Montréal and honoured to be playing this incredible role with such a fine company.”  Young Joe is played by Samuel Platel.  The all-star cast also includes Cary Lawrence as the Auditor, Danny Blanco-Hall as Jack Johnson, Tristan D. Lalla as Blackie, Jennifer Miller as Lana Turner, Jessica B. Hill as Lena Horne, and Scott Kettles as Max Schmeling.  Show times: Jan. 25 – Feb. 20 Tue., through Sat., 8 p.m., Sunday Matinée 2 p.m.  Tickets:  $20; Seniors & Students $15; Groups (6 or more) $10.  During this show, Dominique Normand, a Laurentian artist, exhibits her paintings at the theatre located at the historic Bain St-Michel, 5300, St-Dominique, Montreal. www.infinitheatre.com  514 987–774 Ext: 102.
