Sweet Crude -
Cal Lane
November 21, 2010 –
January 9, 2011
Vernissage: Sunday,
November 21, starting at 2PM
Saint-Jérôme, November
9th, 2010. Armed with
a plasma
cutter and an industrial blow torch, Cal Lane cuts intricate lace-like
patterns and imagery into
oil tanks, oil drums and oil cans, and adorns them with Christian
symbols, sex scenes, maps of the world, and bungalows. This body of
work, created in continuity with the preceding series, simply entitled
Crude, judiciously juxtaposes symbols related to the current
conflicts between the Middle East and the Western World, the present oil
crisis, as well as the potential end of the American way of life.
Biography
Born in 1968
in
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Cal Lane was raised in Saanichton, British
Columbia. Following her welding certification, she successively
completed a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD)
in 2001, and a MFA from the State University of New York at Purchase
(2005). Since 2001, Lane has exhibited her work nationally and
internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the
Art Gallery of
Nova Scotia (2002-03), the Textile Museum of Canada (2006), the Museum
of Art and Design (New York, 2007), Musea Brugge (Belgium, 2008) and the
DeCordova Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Massachusetts (2008-10).
Shortlisted for the
Sobey Art Award in 2004, she has been the recipient of several awards
and distinctions, including the
2006
Emerging Artist Fellowship and residency at the Socrates Sculpture Park
in Long Island City, New York and the 2007 Joseph S. Stauffer Prize, an
award given “to encourage young Canadians of outstanding promise or
potential” from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Armand
Destroismaisons
– exhibition entitled "Hommage aux compositeurs de
musique sacrée" ...cathedrals, paintings and sculptures continues until 31 oct.
This time the whole space is used to show the work of one artists.
Armand took a subject and sunk his teeth into it with sculptures, oil
paintings of varying sizes, and even dry-point engraved metal plates
displayed on the wall. He pays homage to composers (Mendelsohn,
Rachmaninoff and many others) and even paying homage to Hildegard of
Bingen.
This time, his usual sense of humour is not as evident as with some of
his previous gargantuan sculptures. The way the artwork is displayed makes
one wish to purchase a sculpture together with a painting, they make such a
contrasting objects, yet together they deliver the message even better.
Armand works well combining the natural colours of metal, stone and wood, his
paintings are exuberant with strongly contrasting colours, while his metal
plates are devoid of colour. For this exhibition, Armand had metal tubes
made especially to display his small cathedrals at different heights.
It adds to unite the whole collection together.

Suzanne
Jean – Moments de Lumière: exhibition of acrylic and mixed
media paintings. After taking painting classes in Saint-Sauveur for a
few years, Suzanne Jean takes the plunge into sharing her art with the
viewers. This is a collection of abstract images that are composed and
provide an expression of the moods that engulfed the artist while
painting. The use of colours, layering and transparency is subtle in
some of the canvases. There are a few small collages that are well done
too! The exhibit is well displayed in this lovely bright exhibit
center. The artists of the Laurentians do need exhibit space before
they embark into the regular gallery exposure, this is one good starting
place for emerging artists.
Opening hours: October 15 to 24th. Vernissage: Saturday, 16
October at 1:30 p.m. Exhibition continues to October 24 Maison de la

two different series:
Ombres en exil

L’Atelier rouge.
These red and black series of digital prints touch on renowned artists
such as Goya, Reinhardt and Matisse, and are about a renewed interest in
painting influenced by digital methods. The artist let herself be
influenced by new techniques of print-making in order to return to
painting. There is a challenging exchange between traditional methods
and current techniques stemming from a white stone she has been using
for thirty years. The public is invited to the opening on Wednesday,

Triple
Point-of-View Exhibition, image3-
An intriguing Art Show
Based on an unusual premise, three Montreal artists - Claudine
Ascher, Yvonne Callaway Smith and Diane Collet - show work
inspired by the same twenty photographs. The “imposed image” concept
challenged the three to create outside their comfort zones. The result
is an exhibition showcasing the significantly different ways in which
artists process, visualize and render images. Sixty works are shown.
Vernissage: Wednesday, 5 May between 17:00 - 19:30 - the exhibit
continues until May 28th. Location: George
Laoun Opticien, (in the building of the Museum of Fine Arts) 1368,
Sherbrooke St. W., Montreal. 514 985-0015. Submitted

Birds
Take Flight at St. Faustin
From March 6 to April 25th, an exhibition with the theme "Birds" is on
display at the St. Faustin exhibit center. There are wrought iron
sculptures by Jean Rémy and paintings by Manon Desjardins.
Jean Rémy came to Canada from France, and resides in St. Donat since
1968. Working in metal for utilitarian building items such as
doors, window screens and fences he moved on to create his outdoor
wrought iron bird sculptures.
Manon Desjardins lives and works in St-Sébastien in the Eastern
townships. She has been involved in the art scene in the past 20
years. She is a self-taught artist who communicates with colours.
Since 2001 the bird figures in her images. She says that she
admires birds because of their sense of survival, endurance and capacity
to go wherever they wish.

Roger
Lauzon – “Forme et Lumière”
Intriguing images and an interaction between forms and light are
depicted in the
series of
photographs Roger Lauzon presents. Roger Lauzon is asking us to open
our eyes to what is happening around us. He
reflects on prehistoric creatures that did not survive
due to
change in atmospheric pressure. He zooms in on a wood branch drying
from over exposure to the sun, he laments and questions whether
there is still hope for the preservation of nature in this world. Roger
takes his photographs during his constant forays
into nature. What he discovers at a glance, leads to poetic
interpretations.
Thus he accompanies his images with text he composed himself. In fact,
during the opening of his show on Sunday, March 7th,
he may have a professional
reading
his poems. Roger Lauzon
is
a member of
ARTS Morin Heights,
and dduring
summer 2010, the public will also be able to meet him during Route des
Arts 2010 open studio art tour.

present.

three and multiple-part formations.
The
artist invites us into a world where dynamic structures, lines and
geometric forms create obscure terrains. He uses paint to support his
drawings and appropriates imagery elements from the past to create
different perspectives.
